This summer I attended The American Legion Auxiliary New Mexico Girls State. Girls State is "a nonpartisan program that teaches young women responsible citizenship and love for God and Country". While at Girls State I decided to run for Girls Nation. Girls Nation, also sponsored by The American Legion Auxiliary, is the national level of Girls State. Each Girls State elects 2 Senators to represent them in Washington DC for a week. During the final round of competition for Girls Nation each girl stood in front of the entire Girls State and gave a speech about the bill they brought with them to Girls State. Start My Library has given me insight into illiteracy in New Mexico so I chose to focus on ending illiteracy. My bill proposed adult literacy classes, including english as a second language classes, to be held at elementary, middle, and high schools throughout the state of New Mexico. My previous experience with Start My Library gave me a strong foundation for my speech and I know that played a role in the election. I was elected Senior Senator from New Mexico to Girls Nation. I have no doubt that the Giving Library was important on my journey to Girls Nation. The Giving Library would not have been possible without the incredible amount of support from my community. Thank you for your continued support that has allowed me a countless number of amazing experiences. While at Girls Nation I debated bills in a mock senate, met with Senator Udall, listened to a holocaust survivor tell her inspiring and heart wrenching story, laid a red poppy on a grave in Arlington National Cemetery, and met President Obama.
