I recently found out that I have been named the New Mexico High School Volunteer of the Year for the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards. As a part of this award I received and all-expense paid trip to Washington D.C. in early May, and engraved Silver Medallion, and $1,000. I have also been entered into the running to be a National Winner. 10 National Winners, 5 High School and 5 Middle School, will be selected from the 102 State Winners. These National Winners will receive an additional $5,000, a Gold Medallion, a trophy, and an additional $5,000 to donate to a charity of their choice. I recently partnered with Bridges to Tajikistan, a non-profit committed to creating sustainable international connections between Tajikistan and the US, to send books to American Corners in Tajikistan. This non-profit is just getting off the ground and I am happy to help them in any way. Bridges to Tajikistan was inspired by the recent delegation of Tajiks that visited Albuquerque. I met with this group and you can read more about it in the post below. American Corners, for those of you who don't know, are buildings run by the US Consulate in Tajikistan that have internet access and learning matierials. They were created to help educated the Tajik people and to help close the culture gap. One of the things the Tajiks asked for the most were books in English as they are rare and expensive in Tajikstan. I was very happy to donate books to be sent to these American Corners. If you would like to find out more about Bridges to Tajikstan please visit their Facebook and their Website.
